Why magnesium glycinate?

The form of magnesium you take matters more than the milligram count on the label. Here's what actually happens inside your body, in plain English.

The absorption problem

Magnesium oxide, the most common form in drugstore supplements, is one of the least absorbable. Studies of magnesium bioavailability have put oxide's absorption at only a few percent of the dose. The magnesium your body doesn't absorb doesn't just disappear: it pulls water into your intestines. That's the laxative effect drugstore magnesium is famous for.

Magnesium glycinate works differently. The magnesium is bound (chelated) to glycine, an amino acid your body already uses. This chelated form is better protected through the digestive tract and is absorbed alongside the amino acid, so more magnesium gets in, with far less of the stomach upset.

Put simply: it's not about taking more magnesium. It's about taking a form your body can actually use.

Why glycine matters

Glycine isn't just a carrier molecule. It's an inhibitory neurotransmitter that helps quiet nervous-system activity. So with magnesium glycinate you get two things working in the same direction:

The calcium–magnesium seesaw

Calcium contracts. Magnesium relaxes. Every muscle contraction and nerve impulse needs calcium to fire and magnesium to reset afterward. Modern diets tend to run calcium-rich and magnesium-poor, which can leave the nervous system stuck a little too far toward "on."

What the research says about sleep

The evidence here is promising but still early, and we'd rather be straight with you than oversell it. A 2021 systematic review (Mah & Pitre) looked at magnesium and sleep and found it was associated with improvements in some insomnia measures, while the authors were clear that the studies were small and of low certainty and called for larger trials. Earlier work (Abbasi et al., 2012) found magnesium supplementation improved several sleep measures in older adults with low magnesium status. The proposed mechanism isn't sedation, it's supporting the mineral balance your body uses to shift into its rest state.*
